As CNN.com is streaming a live broadcast of the Newseum’s memorial ceremony to the world’s fallen journalists, Second Life also has a working memorial for murdered journalists, featuring Filipino journalists. Contact memorial founder dakila.lacava@gmail.com for more information. My avatar’s name is Cheryl Nitely. I’m an SL journalist for SLNN.com and a friend of Lacava. What an idiotic concept! What moron came up with this ridiculous idea?

Dakila Lacava   April 9th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

When I and the friend who helped conceptualize and build this memorial finished building it, it had 53 names of murdered journalists from 2001 to 2007. It was already the highest death toll under any sitting Philippine president. But by Christmas Eve last year, we had to add yet another name. I realize it would probably be wishful thinking but I did hope the list would end there. Alas, I will have to add yet another name. On Monday, April 7, a lone gunman murdered smalltown newspaper columnist Benefredo Acabal in Pasig City, which is in the heart of the Philippines’ national capital region. He was the 55th journalist slain under this administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The manner of his death, in the heart of the capital and in front of several eyewitnesses, highlights the impunity with which those who seek to silence the press enjoy, thanks to official inaction and to the persistent attempts of government to muzzled the media with repressive decrees.
