Elvis
O! Rapture! O! Hallelujah! ‘Oly Moley! Elvis the Undead King lives on and is worshipped every Sunday at 12 noon in The First Second Life Church of Elvis in Iron Fist. Led by the redoubtable, fragrant and insane Reverend Elvis Faust, each service is a tour de force of the channelled wisdom of the hip-swinging rock and roller of yesteryear that ends in either a mass parachute jump or stomach churning ride on a huge bouncing deep-fried cheese sandwich. Whatever you are planning to do this Sunday, make sure you stop by the First Second Life Church of Elvis and make sure you worship the King like you mean it, uh huh! Van Gogh
I seem to be looking at the dark side of Second Life quite a lot and wondered if drugs featured heavily in some avators’ lives. I had seen av’s smoking giant ’spliff’s’ whilst on my travels, so I was curious to see what else went on. I easily found a drugs shop by looking in the search menu and teleported over there. I was amazed at the range of different drugs for sale, anything from Heroin to Magic Mushrooms. You might ask yourself how drugs give an avator the ‘buzz’ they are looking for. Well I’ve no idea, but apparently some of the drugs are scripted so they must do something. You can even become a dealer as there are advertisements all over the shop for people wanting to sell drugs. The owner of the shop has a notice by the door, a message for Linden Labs, it states ‘You created Teen Grid Second Life with a reason. Enforce it and respect mature customers’. I wonder what the Lindens would make of this, but then again they want people to create their own version of a second life, and that includes warts and all.

Tonight saw the awards for the latest photo contest to be held by Osprey Therian and Enjah Mysterio in Osprey’s photography studio gallery in Grignano. The theme of the contest was Unnatural Hue and allowed entrants to play around with the nature of colour and light in SL, as well as the heart of the browser itself by allowing various render options to be incorporated into the work. In an event full of fun and laughter, the first prize went to Caliburn Susanto and all the wonderful shots will be on display until the middle of January 08.

BREAKING NEWS: Ron Berwick rezzes a CNN kiosk and asks parcel owner Kesseret Steeplechase to get it to stream. Upon inspection it’s discovered that the UI is horrendous for this kiosk- it doesn’t stream but constantly gives you stuff. Upon going to CNN Island they discovered that they are urged to ‘take a copy of the kiosk’ except no kiosks on the island are copyable. WE ARE CONFUSED.

Sandboxes are supposed to be peaceful places for building anything from a piece of jewellery to a house. Regretfully, I have found that you have to be on your guard more than ever if you are going to use a sandbox. People frequently try out their weapons and think it is good fun to pick on newbies or anyone else who may wander by. Today as I teleported into Sandbox Island, I witness three newbies being caged, two escaped almost straight away and the other one was trapped for a second or two. I examed the cages and discovered they belonged to the lady standing near me. She didn’t look like a griefer and I asked her why she had caged the people, especially as they had looked like newbies. She was friendly and told me that the ‘newbies’ had been following her around pushing into her, so in the end she had decided to use her cage gun on them. I can quite believe her story, as I too have been pushed and shoved by people on numerous occasions, although I have not wanted their attention. I’m sure this lady didn’t want any discourse with these three avators either. They may have been newbies as a lot of them walk into people instead of saying ‘hello’, especially guys who really just want to talk to a girl they take a fancy to. I would imagine though, that these three may not have been newbies at all, just alternative avators belonging to older second life residents. The clue being that they clicked on the bottom of the cages knowing they could escape that way. It goes to show that you can’t always be sure who is the griefer and who is the victim, best to get the whole story before you decide.

Being unique in Second Life is as important as it is in RL. The 12 choices of avatar design available when you start SL would be a deal breaking limit in RL. There is a multitude of products available for purchase to customize yourself, but it can be a challenge to be unique employing only free items. One way is to take advantage of premium designer giveaways. Some designers put the latest creations out for free for a limited time before offering them for sale in their shop. Around holidays you can also find gifts under christmas trees or in items scattered around for scavenger hunting as well. Second life’s Wiki page has an entry about “Fashion in Second Life” (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Fashion_in_Second_Life) with links to fashion publications. Sometimes, they tell of designer freebies available. Groups can help guide you to good free items as well. Check out Fashion Consolidated, The Avastar readers and Freebie Hunting Babes. Filthy Fluno, shown here on Orange Island, is a one-man riot to promote art, social-networking, and innovative cultural discourse in Second Life. His 7-painting series “Hackers” invites discussions about how to make a living in a copyable world, and he hopes to help create a virtual art market. Fluno’s show and talk kicked off a week of art and music events sponsored by orange-island.com, the Orange/France Telecom Group’s presence in SL.
